Welcome to a brand new year

Welcome to a Brand new Year!

2017 / 01 / 05

Dear all,

My name is Wassi Azizi and I come from Afghanistan. For many years I worked in the Afghan television industry, but in late 2015 I had to leave. My family and I received several death threats and I had no other choice but to leave my family and friends behind and flee my homeland.

I abandoned everything I had ever dreamed of - a career in journalism in a free and open Afghanistan. Many of my colleagues who stayed behind were killed by people who don’t believe in freedom of speech and democracy.

After a long and winding journey through Europe, I arrived in Sweden at the end of December 2015. At first, I was sent to Haparanda by Migrationsverket where I managed to get an internship with the Mayor (kommunalråd) Peter Waara. This opportunity gave me a glimpse of Swedish culture and working life, but my dream of working within the media industry was still alive.

After countless e-mails to companies in Stockholm, I finally got a reply from Brand New Content. One thing led to another and they offered me a job as a production assistant. Since starting, I have worked on many of the company’s exciting projects such as Svenska Hjältar, Brottscentralen, Jul med Ernst and Fotbollsgalan.

The past few months have been really inspiring. The creativity in the Swedish media industry, the ambition to push boundaries and the constant focus on quality, from both clients and co-workers, amazes me every day.

But above all – I’ve experienced the joy of working in an environment where you can publish, say and do whatever you want without having to watch your back every day. Without risking imprisonment or serious life threats. And as you can imagine, that is a miraculous gift for me. A gift that I will cherish in my future work here in Sweden and, hopefully, one day back in my country, Afghanistan.

With that said, I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome you all back from your holidays and wish both clients and co-workers a Brand New exciting and successful year!

Best regards,

Wassi Azizi
